Training Bat Tier List: Ranking Our Training Bats

We ranked our training bats the way a hitting coach would use them in lessons: by how many jobs each one covers. A higher tier means more versatility, not a better bat. Every trainer here earns its spot. Some just do one thing really well.

The rankings

Tier Training bat Best for
S · All-in-one G Force 2.0 Split Grip overload Split grip bat, heavy trainer and short bat, all in one
A · Core SST underload Barrel whip and sweet spot work, including off the machine
B · Everyday ML19 two-hand short bat Tee work, plyo balls and a lot more
C · Specialist RSD one-hand short bat Dialing in one-hand drills
C · Specialist Sweet Tater Focused sweet spot training
C · Specialist DFT flat bat Seeing and feeling correct hand position

Why the G Force is S tier

It does the work of three trainers: a split grip bat, a heavy overload bat and a short bat. If we were giving lessons, every hitter would use the split grip.

The A and B tiers

The SST underload is the A. It trains barrel whip and the sweet spot, it's built for underload work, and you can use it off the machine. The ML19 is a B: a two-hand short bat that feels great and works for tee work, plyo balls and more.

The specialists: when to reach for a C-tier bat

The RSD, Sweet Tater and DFT flat bat are built to isolate one skill, which is exactly what a hitter needs when one part of the swing needs attention.

  • RSD one-hand short bat: for hitters working on top-hand or bottom-hand control. One-hand drills expose what a two-hand swing can hide.
  • Sweet Tater: for hitters who need reps squaring up the ball, with nothing else to think about.
  • DFT flat bat: for hitters whose hand position needs fixing. The flat sides show right away whether the hands are in the right spot at contact.

A good way to use them: pair a specialist with an all-in-one trainer. The G Force or SST for the full workout, a specialist for the fix.

See every trainer on our training page, and read how to pair them in overload and underload training: the basics. Not sure which fits your hitter? Get a training bat recommendation.

Key takeaways

  • The tiers rank versatility, not quality.
  • The G Force 2.0 Split Grip overload ranks S because it's a split grip bat, heavy trainer and short bat in one.
  • The SST underload ranks A for barrel whip and sweet spot work, and the ML19 ranks B for everyday tee and plyo work.
  • The RSD, Sweet Tater and DFT flat bat are specialists, the right pick when a hitter needs to isolate one skill.
