Frequently Asked Questions

How is the SST different from a regular game bat?
The SST is intentionally built 5 to 6 ounces lighter than a game bat at the same length. The skinny handle, long neck, and short barrel maximize barrel whip and isolate the sweet spot. It's not a regulation bat — it's a training tool designed to make hitters feel what fast actually feels like.
When should I use the SST in practice?
The SST works as a workout finisher after heavier training, as a standalone speed session, or in any tee, front toss, or overhand BP work where you want to focus on bat speed and barrel control. Many hitting instructors alternate sets between the SST and a regular game bat to train the contrast between heavy and light.
Should I get the SST alone or as part of the Overload & Underload Training Pack?
It depends on what you already own. If you're starting fresh, the Overload & Underload Training Pack bundles the SST with the G Force Split Grip® Overload Trainer and gives you both sides of the methodology. If you already own the G Force or just want to add the underload bat to your training kit, order the SST on its own.
Where can I learn how to use the training bats?
You can learn how to use Tater training bats through our eBooks collection at taterbaseball.com/collections/ebook — detailed guides and training programs are available, including the free Tater Split Grip Overload & Underload Training Guide and our 6-Week Strength Training Program.
How can Tater training bats improve my game?
Tater training bats are designed to target specific areas of your hitting technique — strength, hand-eye coordination, swing speed, and precision. Consistent use of these training tools leads to significant improvements in overall performance at the plate.
Can I get a discount for team or bulk orders?
Yes — we offer team and bulk order discounts on training bats. Email contact@taterbaseball.com to discuss your needs and receive a customized quote for your program.
Are Tater training bats suitable for players of all ages?
Yes, we offer training bats suitable for players of all ages and skill levels. Be sure to select the appropriate size and weight for the player to ensure effective and safe training. Younger players typically start with the Mini G Force or the 26" ML19; high school and adult players use the full-size models.
How do I choose the right training bat for my needs?
Choosing the right training bat depends on your training goals. To build swing strength, the G Force 2.0 overload trainer is the play. To increase bat speed, the SST underload trainer. For hand-eye coordination and contact, the DFT Double Flat Trainer or Sweet Tater. For inside-out drills, the ML19 short bat. TATER-SST (Underload Trainer)

I bought the Tater Underload Hitting Trainer for my 11-year-old son to add some fun and variety to his hitting sessions—and it’s been a game-changer. He loves the lighter feel and the speed he can generate. Practice feels less like work and more like play, and we are all in with a home batting cage so we have to keep the training engaging and this helps. As a surgeon and team doctor for baseball teams, I take training tools seriously. I appreciate that this isn’t just another gimmick—it’s grounded in the proven principle of underload training. Using a lighter bat trains the nervous system to move faster, improves hand speed, and builds a “speed reserve” effect when returning to the gamer bat. Over time, this translates to harder contact and more power without sacrificing mechanics. The Tater Underload Trainer is well-made and feels great in the hands. For parents or coaches who want to build bat speed and keep players engaged, this is an excellent tool in the arsenal.

TATER-SST (Underload Trainer)

Great hitting tool! Alternating between the short heavy training bat and the underload trainer really makes the hitter focus on barrel control.

TATER-SST (Underload Trainer)

This bat has great feel and is working out really well to train bat speed and hand eye coordination. My son loves the way it sounds and feels.

TATER-SST (Underload Trainer)

Great tool. Super durable. Have thousands of swings on my 33.5" model, and just wanted to upgrade to a 34". Feels solid on barrel contact as well - have put up exit velo numbers around 95% of my max. Very easy to tell when you miss or catch one.

TATER-SST (Underload Trainer)

Wasn’t as described. I had seen one of these but it was slightly different. I emailed Tater and asked about the SST that I had seen versus the picture on the Tater website. I was told that the picture was the old version and was assured that I would get one like what I saw. Well, it wasn’t. I got the old version.

TATER-SST (Underload Trainer)

Swings well. Sweet spot is hot, mishits can be bad but that’s the point. Solid contact feels great, and it definitely has helped me with barrel awareness.

TATER-SST (Underload Trainer)

Great product. Just as advertised. Size and weight are a good fit for 10-15 year old

TATER-SST (Underload Trainer)

My son needed help with hitting on the barrel and this was a phenominal addition to our toolset

TATER-SST (Underload Trainer)

Product was good. Tried contacting customer service with a few questions and never got a response.

TATER-SST (Underload Trainer)

Underload Trainer Only 1 practice, for our CCBL team, but our hitters love it so far!
