  • Little League
  • AABC (American Amateur Baseball Congress)
  • Babe Ruth
  • Cal Ripken
  • Dixie Youth Baseball
  • PONY League

Tater® vs. other brands

There's a reason pros are switching to swing Tater®

Most wood bats are made for retail shelves — lower-grade lumber, bulk machining, inconsistent pop. The Tater® Wood Bat is hand-split, hand-finished, and bone-rubbed to MLB standards.

  • Higher density wood lasts longer and provides better “pop” off the barrel.
  • Ink dot tested to prove our bats meet professional standards.
  • Hand-split wood follows the natural grain, making bats stronger, more durable, and less likely to break.
  • Bone rubbing compresses the wood fibers, making the bat harder, improving durability, and increasing ball exit speeds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the C271 Youth legal for Little League?
Yes. The C271 Youth Wood Baseball Bat meets the USA Baseball Bat standard (USABat) as adopted by Little League. The 2.25" barrel diameter and one-piece wood construction make it approved for play in Little League, AABC, Babe Ruth, Cal Ripken, Dixie Youth Baseball, and PONY League. Per Little League's Rule 27, solid one-piece wood bats are approved for play with or without the USA Baseball mark.
What size should my youth player get?
The C271 Youth is built for the bigger youth player — kids with the strength and size to handle a longer barrel. Choose between -5 or -6 drop options to tailor the swing weight. Smaller youth players or hitters new to wood should start with a lighter drop. New to wood entirely? Check the Wood Bat Size Chart for guidance on length and drop by age and height.
What wood is used on the youth 271?
Pro-grade hard maple — the same wood we use on our adult game bats. Same craft standard, just sized for youth players.
What size wood bat should I order?
Length ranges from 30"–34". Drop weight (length-to-weight ratio) ranges from -3 to +2. Drop weight is the difference between bat length in inches and bat weight in ounces — a -3 drop means a 34" bat weighs 31 oz. Most adult hitters use 32"–34" at a -2 or -3 drop. Most BBCOR-certified leagues (high school, NCAA) require -3. For a personalized recommendation by height, weight, and league, use our Wood Bat Size Chart at /pages/wood-bat-size-chart.
What types of wood are Tater bats made from?
Hard maple and yellow birch — both MLB-grade. Maple has been the pro standard for over 20 years: densest, hardest hitting surface, biggest pop on clean contact, but a smaller sweet spot and less forgiveness on mis-hits. Birch sits between maple and ash — similar density to maple with more flex on impact, which makes it more forgiving on mis-hits and a smart starting point for hitters transitioning from metal to wood. Read the full breakdown in our Maple vs Birch vs Ash guide at /blogs/the-lumber-yard/differences-between-maple-birch-and-ash-bats.
Do you offer discounts for team or bulk orders?
Yes — team and bulk pricing is available, typically starting at 12 bats. Contact our team sales desk with your spec, roster size, and timing through /pages/contact-us and we'll send a custom quote within one business day. The more bats in the order, the better the per-unit pricing scales.
Are Tater bats suitable for professional play?
Yes. Tater Baseball is an MLB-supplier wood bat company — our bats are swung by professional players at the highest level of the game. There is no separate "consumer-grade" production line. The same MLB-grade billets, the same hand-finishing process, and the same QA standards apply to every retail bat we ship as to the bats we cut for pro hitters.
What is the warranty on Tater wood bats?
30-day limited warranty on structural cracking under normal field use. To qualify, the bat must be a 2021 model year or later, you must be the original purchaser with proof of purchase from an authorized Tater dealer, and you must have followed our hitting guidelines (no cage-style dimpled balls, no storage in extreme heat or cold like a car trunk, no excessive moisture exposure). Full warranty terms and care guidelines at /pages/tater-wooden-bat-warranty.
Why are wood bats cupped at the end?
Cupping is a small concave dish drilled into the end of the barrel. It removes a few grams of mass from the very tip, which shifts the bat's balance point slightly toward the hands and makes the swing feel quicker through the zone. Tater hand-cups each bat, and our process allows for variable cup depths to dial in feel without compromising end-cap strength — which actually reduces the risk of chips and cracks on inside pitches.
What is the black dot on the handle?
Every Tater maple and birch bat carries an ink dot near the handle as proof of MLB-grade slope-of-grain certification. The ink dot's bleed pattern reveals whether the wood grain runs cleanly along the bat's long axis — a tight bleed means safe, MLB-spec slope; a fast bleed means rejected billet. The dot is the visible proof every bat passed inspection before leaving our shop.
