What is a 271 turn model?

The 271 is one of the oldest and most-used wood bat turn models in professional baseball, dating back to the early 1970s. The spec is medium handle, medium barrel, balanced feel, with a flared knob and a rapid taper-to-barrel transition. The 271 is sometimes referred to as the C271 in industry catalogs. The Tater® 271 Pro is built to the same specs pros have trusted for over 50 years.

Is the 271 better for contact hitters or power hitters?

Both. The 271's medium-medium-balanced spec is the most versatile turn profile in baseball — it works for power hitters who want enough barrel mass for damage and contact hitters who want enough speed to handle velocity. If you don't yet know what turn model fits your swing, the 271 is the right place to start. If you're sure you want more speed (X12) or more barrel (I13/XL5), Tater Baseball® has dedicated builds for that.

What's the difference between the Tater® 271 Pro and other Tater turns?

The 271 is the classic baseline. The X12 Pro leans contact (thin handle, balanced). The I13 Pro leans power (large barrel, slight end load). The XZ Pro leans middle-of-the-order (thin handle + large barrel hybrid). The 271 sits in the middle of all of them and works for hitters across every spot in the lineup.

What size wood bat should I order?

Length ranges from 30"–34". Drop weight (length-to-weight ratio) ranges from -3 to +2. Drop weight is the difference between bat length in inches and bat weight in ounces — a -3 drop means a 34" bat weighs 31 oz. Most adult hitters use 32"–34" at a -2 or -3 drop. What types of wood are Tater bats made from?

Hard maple and yellow birch — both MLB-grade. Maple has been the pro standard for over 20 years: densest, hardest hitting surface, biggest pop on clean contact, but a smaller sweet spot and less forgiveness on mis-hits. Birch sits between maple and ash — similar density to maple with more flex on impact, which makes it more forgiving on mis-hits and a smart starting point for hitters transitioning from metal to wood. What is the warranty on Tater wood bats?

30-day limited warranty on structural cracking under normal field use. To qualify, the bat must be a 2021 model year or later, you must be the original purchaser with proof of purchase from an authorized Tater dealer, and you must have followed our hitting guidelines (no cage-style dimpled balls, no storage in extreme heat or cold like a car trunk, no excessive moisture exposure). Why are wood bats cupped at the end?

Cupping is a small concave dish drilled into the end of the barrel. It removes a few grams of mass from the very tip, which shifts the bat's balance point slightly toward the hands and makes the swing feel quicker through the zone. Tater hand-cups each bat, and our process allows for variable cup depths to dial in feel without compromising end-cap strength — which actually reduces the risk of chips and cracks on inside pitches.

What is the black dot on the handle?

Every Tater maple and birch bat carries an ink dot near the handle as proof of MLB-grade slope-of-grain certification. The ink dot's bleed pattern reveals whether the wood grain runs cleanly along the bat's long axis — a tight bleed means safe, MLB-spec slope; a fast bleed means rejected billet. The dot is the visible proof every bat passed inspection before leaving our shop.
