The Tater® pine tar wood bat is built to embody the look of a bat loaded with pine tar — without the smell or mess. Built on our X12 Pro turn profile in pro-grade maple. Ships next business day from our shop in Cheshire, CT.

What makes this pine tar wood bat different

We as ballplayers know through experience that the pine tar look is swaggy — but real pine tar comes with cons. It can ruin the rest of your gear or other bats. Putting it in your bag, resting it on your shoulder, or grabbing it with batting gloves spreads tar all over without you noticing.

The Tater® version is sealed into the maple. The finish is locked into the wood, not surface-applied. So it doesn't smell or transfer to your gloves and gear. The look stays sharp from first BP through the end of the season.

Built on the X12 Pro profile

This bat is built on our very popular Tater-X12 Pro turn profile. The X12 is a thin handle, medium barrel, balanced-feel maple wood bat modeled after Francisco Lindor's on-field bat. It works for contact hitters who want bat speed through the zone with the ability to drive the ball.

Looking for the pine tar look on a different model? Head to our Custom Bat Builder. You can build any turn profile as a sealed pine tar bat. Custom builds take about 10-14 business days.

Who this bat is for

The X12 turn profile fits a wide range of hitters. The thin handle and medium barrel give you bat speed without losing barrel mass. The balanced feel keeps you through the ball to all fields. The maple gives you a hard, dense hitting surface that handles fastballs without flexing.

If you're a high school, college, or summer-league contact hitter — or a senior-league hitter who wants the look of a pro bat, this is the build. Power hitters who prefer end-loaded weight can build the X12 heavier through the custom builder.

Built by an MLB bat supplier

Tater Baseball® invented the sealed pine tar style — the first bat to capture the pine-tarred-handle look without the actual pine tar. Every bat in this run is hand-built in Cheshire, Connecticut and finished to the same standard as our MLB player bats. New to wood bats? Tater™ vs Other Brands
There's a reason Pros are switching to swing Tater™
Most wood bats are made for retail shelves — lower-grade lumber, bulk machining, inconsistent pop. The Tater™ Wood Bat is hand-split, hand-finished, and bone-rubbed to MLB standards.
Higher density wood lasts longer and provides better "pop" off the barrel.
Ink dot tested to prove our bats meet professional standards.
Hand-split wood follows the natural grain, making bats stronger, more durable, and less likely to break.
Bone rubbing compresses the wood fibers, making the bat harder, improving durability, and increasing ball exit speeds.

A TRADITIONAL LOOK

WITH A MODERN APPROACH

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Original Pine Tar Bat™ legal for game use?
The Original Pine Tar Bat™ is a regulation-spec wood bat — hard maple, X12 turn profile, drop -3 — and is legal for high school, college, summer wood-bat leagues, and pro use. The pine tar look is a sealed finish, not surface-applied material, so it meets the same legality rules as any solid wood bat.
How fast does the Original Pine Tar Bat™ ship?
Most orders ship the next business day from our shop in Cheshire, CT. Because the Original Pine Tar Bat™ is a stock model — not made to order — it doesn't go through the 2-3 week custom-build queue. Order today, swing it this week. Team and bulk orders may take an extra day or two to box and ship.
What size wood bat should I order?
Length ranges from 30"–34". Drop weight (length-to-weight ratio) ranges from -3 to +2. Drop weight is the difference between bat length in inches and bat weight in ounces — a -3 drop means a 34" bat weighs 31 oz. Most adult hitters use 32"–34" at a -2 or -3 drop. Most BBCOR-certified leagues (high school, NCAA) require -3. For a personalized recommendation by height, weight, and league, use our Wood Bat Size Chart at /pages/wood-bat-size-chart.
What types of wood are Tater bats made from?
Hard maple and yellow birch — both MLB-grade. Maple has been the pro standard for over 20 years: densest, hardest hitting surface, biggest pop on clean contact, but a smaller sweet spot and less forgiveness on mis-hits. Birch sits between maple and ash — similar density to maple with more flex on impact, which makes it more forgiving on mis-hits and a smart starting point for hitters transitioning from metal to wood. Read the full breakdown in our Maple vs Birch vs Ash guide at /blogs/the-lumber-yard/differences-between-maple-birch-and-ash-bats.
Do you offer discounts for team or bulk orders?
Yes — team and bulk pricing is available, typically starting at 12 bats. Contact our team sales desk with your spec, roster size, and timing through /pages/contact-us and we'll send a custom quote within one business day. The more bats in the order, the better the per-unit pricing scales.
Are Tater bats suitable for professional play?
Yes. Tater Baseball is an MLB-supplier wood bat company — our bats are swung by professional players at the highest level of the game. There is no separate "consumer-grade" production line. The same MLB-grade billets, the same hand-finishing process, and the same QA standards apply to every retail bat we ship as to the bats we cut for pro hitters.
What is the warranty on Tater wood bats?
30-day limited warranty on structural cracking under normal field use. To qualify, the bat must be a 2021 model year or later, you must be the original purchaser with proof of purchase from an authorized Tater dealer, and you must have followed our hitting guidelines (no cage-style dimpled balls, no storage in extreme heat or cold like a car trunk, no excessive moisture exposure). Full warranty terms and care guidelines at /pages/tater-wooden-bat-warranty.
Why are wood bats cupped at the end?
Cupping is a small concave dish drilled into the end of the barrel. It removes a few grams of mass from the very tip, which shifts the bat's balance point slightly toward the hands and makes the swing feel quicker through the zone. Tater hand-cups each bat, and our process allows for variable cup depths to dial in feel without compromising end-cap strength — which actually reduces the risk of chips and cracks on inside pitches.
What is the black dot on the handle?
Every Tater maple and birch bat carries an ink dot near the handle as proof of MLB-grade slope-of-grain certification. The ink dot's bleed pattern reveals whether the wood grain runs cleanly along the bat's long axis — a tight bleed means safe, MLB-spec slope; a fast bleed means rejected billet. The dot is the visible proof every bat passed inspection before leaving our shop.

Customer photo review of Tater-X12 Pro | The Original Pine Tar Bat™

I’ve been a fan of Tater, since I was introduced to them back in 2022 where I purchased my first bat. I had that bat until recently where I’d broke but I was using it consistently and it lasted longer than any wooden bat I had prior to getting a Tater bat. Highly recommend anything they sell. The guys who run Tater are high character people as well

Customer video review of The Original Pine Tar Bat™

I purchased this bat for my son Tyler. Tyler is the captain of the Worcester State Lancers baseball team. This summer, he was selected to play on the Worcester Bravehearts (Futures baseball) and is currently playing on the Lunenburg Phillies ( college summer baseball ). Tyler asked if I would purchase the bat as he used a Tater bat while he was with the Bravehearts. He absolutely loves the look, feel , and pop that gets using the bat. As he says “ serious pop for serious baseball”.

Customer video review of The Original Pine Tar Bat

I was struggling last summer having trouble whipping through the zone until a friend of mine let me use this exact bat! All it took was one AB and I never looked back. It was a must to start this season off right this year with the same bat that gave me the confidence and pop I was looking for. It’s possibly the best bat I’ve ever used. Perfect balance, with a slight end loaded feel and thin handle.

The Original Pine Tar Bat™

Been playing baseball for years played all the way thru college so I’ve swung pretty much everything around and believe me this is one of the best bats I’ve ever swung. Very balanced and super durable. The feeling when the Ball hits the barrel is flawless and you can feel how well constructed the bat is especially when making bad contact. Legitimately don’t think I’ll be swinging other bats again, I genuinely found the perfect bat for me.
