The Tater® Torpedo Wood Bat is built for advanced hitters who want better barrel control without giving up power. The Torpedo Bat loads more wood mass into the sweet spot while shifting weight closer to the hands. The result is a balanced-feel bat with faster swing speeds and a more controlled whip through the zone. Hand-built in the USA in pro-grade maple.

WHAT MAKES THE TATER® TORPEDO WOOD BAT DIFFERENT

The Torpedo profile reshapes how bat mass is distributed. Traditional wood bats push weight out toward the barrel end. The Torpedo concentrates mass into the sweet spot itself — the area where most contact actually happens. That redistribution lets hitters keep the bat speed of a balanced-feel build while delivering the pop of a heavier barrel.

The end of the Torpedo tapers off. Outside pitches are harder to square up because of that taper. But if you have a clean, repeatable swing, this is one of the most rewarding wood bats in the lineup. It rakes.

WHY WE RECOMMEND THE -2 DROP

The Torpedo's mass redistribution gives it a slightly lighter wood density than a standard turn profile. To reduce break risk, we recommend swinging the Torpedo in a Drop 2 (the heavier option). Drop 3 is available, but Drop 2 will get you more durability through a full season.

WHO SHOULD SWING THE TORPEDO

The Torpedo is built for advanced hitters who already know their swing path. The unique mass distribution rewards clean, repeatable mechanics. It's not a forgiving bat for hitters still learning to find the barrel consistently. If you're a contact hitter or middle-of-the-order bat who lives in the sweet spot, this is the build to try. New to wood? Start with our Tater-X12 PRO contact-hitter model instead, then graduate to the Torpedo once your swing is locked in.

BUILT IN CHESHIRE, CT

Tater Baseball® hand-builds wood bats for pro, college, and amateur hitters. The Torpedo carries the same craft standard as every Tater pro-grade bat. Browse the Custom Wood Bat Builder for additional turn profiles, or read the Wood Bat Size Chart before sizing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a torpedo bat and how is it different from a traditional wood bat?
A torpedo bat redistributes mass in the barrel — instead of the traditional design that puts most of the weight at the end of the bat, a torpedo concentrates the mass at the hitter's natural impact zone. The result is a larger sweet spot, more forgiveness on mis-hits, and explosive pop on contact, but with the swing speed of a balanced bat instead of an end-loaded one. The shape became famous when MLB hitters started using it during the 2025 season.
Why do you recommend Drop 2 for the Torpedo?
The Torpedo's mass redistribution gives it a slightly lighter wood density than a standard turn profile. To reduce break risk, we recommend swinging the Torpedo in a Drop 2 (the heavier option). Drop 3 is available, but Drop 2 will give you more durability through a full season.
Who should swing the Torpedo?
The Torpedo is built for advanced hitters who already know their swing path. The unique mass distribution rewards clean, repeatable mechanics. It's not a forgiving bat for hitters still learning to find the barrel consistently. If you're a contact hitter or middle-of-the-order bat who lives in the sweet spot, this is the build to try. New to wood? Start with our Tater-X12 PRO contact-hitter model instead, then graduate to the Torpedo once your swing is locked in.
What size wood bat should I order?
Length ranges from 30"–34". Drop weight (length-to-weight ratio) ranges from -3 to +2. Drop weight is the difference between bat length in inches and bat weight in ounces — a -3 drop means a 34" bat weighs 31 oz. Most adult hitters use 32"–34" at a -2 or -3 drop. Most BBCOR-certified leagues (high school, NCAA) require -3. For a personalized recommendation by height, weight, and league, use our Wood Bat Size Chart at /pages/wood-bat-size-chart.
What types of wood are Tater bats made from?
Hard maple and yellow birch — both MLB-grade. Maple has been the pro standard for over 20 years: densest, hardest hitting surface, biggest pop on clean contact, but a smaller sweet spot and less forgiveness on mis-hits. Birch sits between maple and ash — similar density to maple with more flex on impact, which makes it more forgiving on mis-hits and a smart starting point for hitters transitioning from metal to wood. Read the full breakdown in our Maple vs Birch vs Ash guide at /blogs/the-lumber-yard/differences-between-maple-birch-and-ash-bats.
Do you offer discounts for team or bulk orders?
Yes — team and bulk pricing is available, typically starting at 12 bats. Contact our team sales desk with your spec, roster size, and timing through /pages/contact-us and we'll send a custom quote within one business day. The more bats in the order, the better the per-unit pricing scales.
Are Tater bats suitable for professional play?
Yes. Tater Baseball is an MLB-supplier wood bat company — our bats are swung by professional players at the highest level of the game. There is no separate "consumer-grade" production line. The same MLB-grade billets, the same hand-finishing process, and the same QA standards apply to every retail bat we ship as to the bats we cut for pro hitters.
What is the warranty on Tater wood bats?
30-day limited warranty on structural cracking under normal field use. To qualify, the bat must be a 2021 model year or later, you must be the original purchaser with proof of purchase from an authorized Tater dealer, and you must have followed our hitting guidelines (no cage-style dimpled balls, no storage in extreme heat or cold like a car trunk, no excessive moisture exposure). Full warranty terms and care guidelines at /pages/tater-wooden-bat-warranty.
Why are wood bats cupped at the end?
Cupping is a small concave dish drilled into the end of the barrel. It removes a few grams of mass from the very tip, which shifts the bat's balance point slightly toward the hands and makes the swing feel quicker through the zone. Tater hand-cups each bat, and our process allows for variable cup depths to dial in feel without compromising end-cap strength — which actually reduces the risk of chips and cracks on inside pitches.
What is the black dot on the handle?
Every Tater maple and birch bat carries an ink dot near the handle as proof of MLB-grade slope-of-grain certification. The ink dot's bleed pattern reveals whether the wood grain runs cleanly along the bat's long axis — a tight bleed means safe, MLB-spec slope; a fast bleed means rejected billet. The dot is the visible proof every bat passed inspection before leaving our shop.
