Length: 26"

The Tater® DFT (Double Flat Trainer) is a flat bat trainer. It's a short training bat with two flat sides. The design forces hitters into proper hand position at contact. Players hit on the rounded portion to develop hand-eye coordination and reinforce a square path to the ball. Hand-built in the USA.

How the DFT flat bat trainer works

The DFT has two flat sides and two rounded sides. The hitter is forced to make contact on the rounded portion. If their swing path or hand position is off, they make contact on the flat side. They feel and hear it immediately. The feedback loop is the whole point.

The DFT teaches three core skills:

  • Proper hand position at contact. The flat sides expose any hand-position breakdown the moment it happens.
  • Square contact. Hitters learn to drive the bat through the ball on a square plane.
  • Hand-eye coordination. Hitting the rounded portion consistently builds the eye-to-barrel connection that translates to game bats.

How to use the DFT in practice

The DFT works best for short-distance feeds where the hitter can focus on precision rather than power.

  • Tee work. The cleanest format for isolating contact quality and hand position.
  • Soft toss. Add a soft toss feed to introduce timing and a moving ball.
  • Short-distance front toss. Step it up once the hitter is squaring up consistently on the tee.

Many hitting instructors run the DFT as a warmup tool before live BP. A clean round on the DFT means the hitter is locked in and ready for full-distance pitching.

Who should use the DFT

The DFT is built for hitters at every level. Younger players use it to develop hand-eye coordination before bad habits set in. High school, college, and pro hitters use it to drill back to fundamentals when their swing path drifts. Hitting instructors use it as a diagnostic tool — the DFT reveals exactly where a hitter is breaking down.

HITTING COACHES AND PROS

Our trainers can be found in many professional ballparks, training facilities, and college campuses for a reason.

Hitting coaches across all levels have implemented these training bats into their programs for the sole purpose of promoting proper swing mechanics.

REFINING THE

FUNDAMENTALS OF HITTING

Our training tools focus on building muscle memory by allowing a player to physically feel a correct swing.

Muscle memory will help relax the body, increasing your reaction time while at-bat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Double Flat Trainer's flat-sided design do?
The DFT has two flat sides and two rounded sides. The hitter is forced to make contact on the rounded portion. When their hand position or swing path is off, they hit the flat side instead — and they feel and hear it immediately. That instant feedback is what builds the proper hand position and square contact path the DFT is designed to train.
When in practice should I use the DFT?
The DFT works best for short-distance feeds — tee work, soft toss, and short-distance front toss are the typical formats. Many hitting instructors run the DFT as a warmup tool before live BP. A clean round on the DFT means the hitter is locked in and ready for full-distance pitching.
Is the DFT for younger players or advanced hitters?
Both. Younger players use the DFT to develop hand-eye coordination before bad habits set in. High school, college, and pro hitters use it to drill back to fundamentals when their swing path drifts. Hitting instructors use it as a diagnostic tool because the DFT reveals exactly where a hitter is breaking down.
Where can I learn how to use the training bats?
You can learn how to use Tater training bats through our eBooks collection at taterbaseball.com/collections/ebook — detailed guides and training programs are available, including the free Tater Split Grip Overload & Underload Training Guide and our 6-Week Strength Training Program.
How can Tater training bats improve my game?
Tater training bats are designed to target specific areas of your hitting technique — strength, hand-eye coordination, swing speed, and precision. Consistent use of these training tools leads to significant improvements in overall performance at the plate.
Can I get a discount for team or bulk orders?
Yes — we offer team and bulk order discounts on training bats. Email contact@taterbaseball.com to discuss your needs and receive a customized quote for your program.
Are Tater training bats suitable for players of all ages?
Yes, we offer training bats suitable for players of all ages and skill levels. Be sure to select the appropriate size and weight for the player to ensure effective and safe training. Younger players typically start with the Mini G Force or the 26" ML19; high school and adult players use the full-size models.
How do I choose the right training bat for my needs?
Choosing the right training bat depends on your training goals. To build swing strength, the G Force 2.0 overload trainer is the play. To increase bat speed, the SST underload trainer. For hand-eye coordination and contact, the DFT Double Flat Trainer or Sweet Tater. For inside-out drills, the ML19 short bat.
