The Tater J21 Pro is a knobless wood bat built around a single design idea — remove the traditional knob and let the bat flow naturally through the hands. The sharp flared knob eliminates the bump at the base of the handle, creating a seamless feel that produces a quicker swing path and reduces the pressure on the hamate bone that causes hand injuries in aggressive hitters.

What is a knobless wood bat and who is it built for?
A knobless wood bat replaces the traditional flared knob at the bottom of the handle with a sharper, more gradual flare — the J21 doesn't have the standard bump most hitters are used to feeling at the base of the bat. The design works for two types of hitter: contact hitters who want a faster, more fluid release through the zone, and aggressive swingers who've dealt with hamate bone irritation on a standard knob and want to take pressure off the bottom hand.
Is the J21 closer to an AP21 or a standard 271?
The J21 sits between the two. It uses the thin handle and medium barrel of a 271-style profile but replaces the standard knob with the sharp flare you'd find on an AP21 or other knobless pro turns. The result is a balanced feel — quicker through the zone than a 271 thanks to the knobless transition, but easier to control than an end-loaded AP-family bat.
What's the lead time on a Tater J21 Pro?
The J21 Pro is a custom build, turned and finished in our Connecticut shop. Standard production time runs about 10-14 business days (2-3 weeks) from order to ship.
What size wood bat should I order?
Length ranges from 30"–34". Drop weight (length-to-weight ratio) ranges from -3 to +2. Drop weight is the difference between bat length in inches and bat weight in ounces — a -3 drop means a 34" bat weighs 31 oz. Most adult hitters use 32"–34" at a -2 or -3 drop. What types of wood are Tater bats made from?
Hard maple and yellow birch — both MLB-grade. Maple has been the pro standard for over 20 years: densest, hardest hitting surface, biggest pop on clean contact, but a smaller sweet spot and less forgiveness on mis-hits. Birch sits between maple and ash — similar density to maple with more flex on impact, which makes it more forgiving on mis-hits and a smart starting point for hitters transitioning from metal to wood. What is the warranty on Tater wood bats?
30-day limited warranty on structural cracking under normal field use. To qualify, the bat must be a 2021 model year or later, you must be the original purchaser with proof of purchase from an authorized Tater dealer, and you must have followed our hitting guidelines (no cage-style dimpled balls, no storage in extreme heat or cold like a car trunk, no excessive moisture exposure). Why are wood bats cupped at the end?
Cupping is a small concave dish drilled into the end of the barrel. It removes a few grams of mass from the very tip, which shifts the bat's balance point slightly toward the hands and makes the swing feel quicker through the zone. Tater hand-cups each bat, and our process allows for variable cup depths to dial in feel without compromising end-cap strength — which actually reduces the risk of chips and cracks on inside pitches.
What is the black dot on the handle?
Every Tater maple and birch bat carries an ink dot near the handle as proof of MLB-grade slope-of-grain certification. The ink dot's bleed pattern reveals whether the wood grain runs cleanly along the bat's long axis — a tight bleed means safe, MLB-spec slope; a fast bleed means rejected billet. The dot is the visible proof every bat passed inspection before leaving our shop.
