Tater U238 Pro — The High-Volume Hitter's U-Knob Wood Bat

U-knob wood bat design solves the problem cage rats know best. The pressure points at the base of the handle that cause hamate injuries, blisters, and bottom-palm bruising. The U-shape redistributes that pressure across a wider area. Less wear and tear on the hand, no compromise at the plate.

What's the difference between the U238 U-knob and the J21 knobless design?

Both are built for hitters who deal with hand discomfort from a standard knob, but they solve the problem differently. The J21 is fully knobless — a sharp flared design eliminates the traditional knob bump entirely. The U238 has a U-shaped knob — there's still structure at the bottom of the bat, but the U-shape redistributes pressure across a wider area instead of concentrating it at one point. Pick the J21 if you want zero knob feel. Pick the U238 if you want hamate protection plus the comfort of a defined knob shape at the bottom of the handle.

Who is the U238 specifically built for?

The U238 is built for high-volume hitters — players who take serious reps in the cage, work out at hitting facilities, or hit deep into BP every session. The U-knob protects the hand from the wear and tear that comes with that kind of volume. The XL5 barrel profile means you don't give anything up at the plate to get that protection. Power hitters and gap hitters both work. Contact hitters who want more barrel feel also fit, though the slight end load takes some getting used to.

What size wood bat should I order?

Length ranges from 30"–34". Drop weight (length-to-weight ratio) ranges from -3 to +2. Drop weight is the difference between bat length in inches and bat weight in ounces — a -3 drop means a 34" bat weighs 31 oz. Most adult hitters use 32"–34" at a -2 or -3 drop. What types of wood are Tater bats made from?

Hard maple and yellow birch — both MLB-grade. Maple has been the pro standard for over 20 years: densest, hardest hitting surface, biggest pop on clean contact, but a smaller sweet spot and less forgiveness on mis-hits. Birch sits between maple and ash — similar density to maple with more flex on impact, which makes it more forgiving on mis-hits and a smart starting point for hitters transitioning from metal to wood. The same MLB-grade billets, the same hand-finishing process, and the same QA standards apply to every retail bat we ship as to the bats we cut for pro hitters.

What is the warranty on Tater wood bats?

30-day limited warranty on structural cracking under normal field use. To qualify, the bat must be a 2021 model year or later, you must be the original purchaser with proof of purchase from an authorized Tater dealer, and you must have followed our hitting guidelines (no cage-style dimpled balls, no storage in extreme heat or cold like a car trunk, no excessive moisture exposure). Why are wood bats cupped at the end?

Cupping is a small concave dish drilled into the end of the barrel. It removes a few grams of mass from the very tip, which shifts the bat's balance point slightly toward the hands and makes the swing feel quicker through the zone. Tater hand-cups each bat, and our process allows for variable cup depths to dial in feel without compromising end-cap strength — which actually reduces the risk of chips and cracks on inside pitches.

What is the black dot on the handle?

Every Tater maple and birch bat carries an ink dot near the handle as proof of MLB-grade slope-of-grain certification. The ink dot's bleed pattern reveals whether the wood grain runs cleanly along the bat's long axis — a tight bleed means safe, MLB-spec slope; a fast bleed means rejected billet. The dot is the visible proof every bat passed inspection before leaving our shop.
