Tater Foam Pitching Machine Softball — Built Like the Real Thing

Foam pitching machine softball design starts and ends with weight. A regulation softball weighs 6.5 oz. The Tater foam softball weighs the same. Other foam softballs sold for pitching machines weigh significantly less, which makes them float, rise, and behave nothing like real game balls.

The 6.5 oz weight means real trajectory at real machine speeds. Pitches come in like game balls. Hitters time pitches like game balls. The training transfers to the actual game instead of teaching bad habits the hitter has to unlearn at the plate.

Why 6.5 oz weight matters

Regulation softball weight per NCAA, USA Softball, and NFHS is 6.25 to 7.0 oz. The competitor selling the so-called "heaviest" foam softball weighs in at 5 oz — still 1.5 oz below regulation. A lighter foam softball catches lift off the pitching machine wheels and rises unnaturally. Hitters train their eye for a flight path that doesn't exist in real games. The Tater foam softball matches true regulation weight at 6.5 oz exactly. That's the real regulation-weight foam ball, not just the heaviest of the lighter alternatives.

Built for ages 11–17

This training softball is tailored for ambitious young athletes who want real reps without real bruises. The foam construction reduces injury risk on close-range pitching machine work. The 6.5 oz weight builds correct timing and swing mechanics. Durable build holds up to high-volume reps season after season. Also great for indoor facility training where regulation softballs cause damage.

Pitching machine compatibility

The Tater foam softball feeds cleanly through every major fastpitch and slowpitch pitching machine on the market. Jugs. Heater. Sports Attack. Spinball. ATEC. Sports Tutor. Works at speeds up to 70+ mph. Handles fastballs, rise balls, drop balls, and changeups without compromising flight or durability.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 / 5 STARS

I have used other foam balls that are too light and create unrealistic spin and movement other balls also do not provide the same feedback off of the bat as tater foam balls do.

Because the weight of the Tater Foam Balls are equivalent to a regular baseball, hitters can feel squared up contact much more effectively."

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the 6.5 oz weight matter on a foam softball?
A regulation softball weighs 6.5 oz. The Tater foam softball matches that exactly. Most foam softballs on the market run significantly lighter — typically 5 oz or less, which sounds minor but creates a major problem in practice. Lighter foam balls catch lift off the pitching machine wheels and rise unnaturally as they approach the plate. Hitters train their eye for a flight path that doesn't exist in real games. Then they get to game day and their timing is off. Matching regulation weight means real trajectory, real timing, real training transfer.
How does the Tater foam softball compare to other foam softballs on the market?
Two things separate the Tater foam softball from every other foam softball sold for pitching machines: regulation weight and craftsmanship. Regulation softball weight per NCAA, USA Softball, and NFHS is 6.25 to 7.0 oz. The Tater foam softball is 6.5 oz exactly — true regulation. The other foam softballs marketed as "heavy" or "realistic" come in around 5 oz, well below regulation. Lighter balls rise unnaturally off pitching machine wheels and teach the hitter's eye a flight path that doesn't exist in real games. Match regulation weight, and the training transfers to game day.
Does the Tater foam softball work for fastpitch or slowpitch?
Both. The 6.5 oz weight is regulation across both fastpitch and slowpitch softball. The foam construction handles speeds up to 70+ mph (well above standard fastpitch velocities) and feeds cleanly through every major fastpitch and slowpitch pitching machine — Jugs, Heater, Sports Attack, Spinball, ATEC, Sports Tutor.

Customer photo review of Tater® Foam Softball by Tater Baseball®

I purchased 2xDozen Tater® Foam Softballs for use in an Atec M3X 2.0 pitching machine. I asked my 12U fastpitch team if I should buy more Tater balls or get dimple balls ... it was unanimous. We're never using dimple balls again. The girls reported very little-to-no sting, they could use their game bats, the ball stays true when pitched and hit. I am buying another 2xdozen balls.

Tater® Foam Softball by Tater Baseball®

Balls are realistic and fly true 9-10 times. 1 in 10 can look more like a cutter, but that could be don’t many separate factors. If you’ve got a high school team, that needs tons of reps and are trying to save bat life; then these are the balls for you

Tater® Foam Softball by Tater Baseball®

Great balls for hitting. We’ve ordered several dozen and use them almost daily on machine. Hold up very well. We’ve only broken about 7 balls with daily usage over the last several months and just ordered another dozen balls. Much better than dimple balls (very very minimal sting and a plus to be able to use your tegukar bat) and have a much better flight path like a regular ball being pitched.

The tater training softballs are AWESOME!! WE use them in our juggs machine, and they do everything a real softball does except damage our machine.

My daughter was really impressed with the way it feels when you hit it pretty close to a real softball, ball flight definitely some extra feet

Tater™ Foam Softball by Tater Baseball®

Same weight as regulation softball. Great to use in practice when field is wet. Just wipe it and it’s good to use again. Can use in all pitching machines.
